Travel reports have become an interesting part of Waterlog. Even though we live in such a beautiful place, a good number of houseboaters love to travel. Doctor Jim (Weyand) and I are two such travelers. For our three-week trip this winter, we headed for South America, to a place about as far away from Seattle as you can go and still be in the Americas.

The Lake Union Opportunity Alliance (LUOA) has alerted us to a City Council hearing concerning a spot zone proposed for the South Lake Union area, We copy their announcement to their members here --
Dear Fellow South Lake Union Stakeholders,
Update on Vulcan/UW Phase III –The City is sponsoring a ‘Text Amendment’ for Vulcan and UW to build a new R & D facility on the block bounded by Mercer, Dexter, Republican and 8th Avenue. LUOA is very much for a UW R & D facility on this block, but one built within the rules and codes as is their operating facility is across 8th Avenue.
While we believe some of our issues have been recognized by DPD, we remain concerned that new burdensome requirements may be proposed that are out of proportion to the benefit they might have ...

Western Washington has a mystique. It's a unique blend of snow-capped mountains, misty rain forests, waters everywhere (an inland sea, bays, lakes, rivers), whales, elk, salmon and mild, mosquito-free climate. All Western Washington's diverse natural elements are entwined in a complex, self-sustaining order. The threads of its beautiful tapestry began to weave together about 13,000 years ago when the 3,000-foot-deep Vashon Glacier retreated.
Unfortunately, after thousands of years of perfect primal coordination, this mixture of natural wonders is falling apart.
