Please Help With the 2010 Tour

Our last association fundraiser was the Houseboat Tour of 2008. The funds raised by that tour enabled us to hire legal help, a lobbyist and various experts including funding a study of juvenile Chinook salmon in our waters, all to champion our community against the encroachment of the proposed Shoreline Master Program revision. This battle continues.

It is time to begin work on the Houseboat Tour of 2010, scheduled for Sunday, September 12th. As you all know, it is a huge undertaking – we put our whole community on display for over 1000 people! We need help from the entire community to organize and execute the tour.

Travel reports have become an interesting part of Waterlog. Even though we live in such a beautiful place, a good number of houseboaters love to travel. Doctor Jim (Weyand) and I are two such travelers. For our three-week trip this winter, we headed for South America, to a place about as far away from Seattle as you can go and still be in the Americas.

houseboat living

Sunday, September 12, 2010.  Noon to 5:00 PM

The Floating Homes Association is pleased once again to host the biennial tour of floating homes.  This year the tour will feature about a dozen homes on Lake Union.  The theme: From funky to fabulous – 100 years of houseboat living, reflects the spirit and evolution of our historic community.

Lake Union Virtual Museum

If you have a reasonably fast internet connection (enough for YouTube), check out Lake Union Virtual Museum.

The virtual museum features "exhibits," or short videos, about Lake Union and its history.  Included are a site introduction with Dick Wagner, founder of the Center for Wooden Boats and past president of the Floating Homes Association; a piece about houseboats with Howard Droker, author of the definitive history "Seattle's Unsinkable Houseboats;" and the story of Cheshiahud, the last of the First People on Lake Union, with Jacqueline Swanson, a descendant.

Shorelines Market Study Released

DPD has published their Comparison of Land Supply and Demand for Water-Dependent and Water-Related Uses.  This is the report generated from interviews last summer with owners and users of the shorelines.

The Lake Union Opportunity Alliance (LUOA) has alerted us to a City Council hearing concerning a spot zone proposed for the South Lake Union area, We copy their announcement to their members here --

Dear Fellow South Lake Union Stakeholders,

Update on Vulcan/UW Phase III –The City is sponsoring a ‘Text Amendment’ for Vulcan and UW to build a new R & D facility on the block bounded by Mercer, Dexter, Republican and 8th Avenue.  LUOA is very much for a UW R & D facility on this block, but one built within the rules and codes as is their operating facility is across 8th Avenue.
